We were headed home from a short mid
week vacation in upstate New York.
Our normal route for such a journey
placed us Southbound on Interstate 81
which, to some, is becoming know as
the "Interstate Parking Lot!"
If Ike's plan was to move military
traffic quickly over this highway system
he would have had to use helicopters and
flown over it!
Between construction work and an
occasional accident the only place you
can count on 65 miles-per-hour is on the
Entrance ramps!
But it doesn't have to be that way!
In New York we came across an
accident and a "slight" slow down of
traffic.
But police there, and highway workers
sent a Flagman out to the point where
traffic had to merge to avoid the accident
scene. By following his directions all of
the cars and trucks were able to keep
moving even if it was at a slow pace.
Enter Pennsylvania!
Construction was the problem here!
Just before the mess a State Trooper
sat in his car, red light flashing, so you
could be warned of the slow down that
was about to become a dead stop!
A bright orange sign told drivers
the left lane was closed just ahead.
Maybe if it had offered free money
drivers would have started to merge.
Most just inched ahead in the sure
and certain hope they'd be able to
squeeze in those last two feet before
the lane actually closed!
To make matters worse there was
an entrance lane trying to merge into
the mess from our right!
Lots of workmen up ahead.
But nobody to handle a flag that
could have kept things moving!
Why can't Troopers get out of
their cars and direct traffic around
these problems?
It's a wonder the bad guys haven't
pulled a heist near a construction zone....
then made their get away on our secondary
roads.
At the very least somebody should be
allowed to walk along the highway to
sell hot dogs and soda!
Maybe we could fund the State
Pension system that way!
Or, maybe we could pay for road
repairs!
Hope you're not stuck in traffic here
in the Keystone State and that all your
NEWS is good!
