WALKING TO SCHOOL!

WALKING TO SCHOOL!
I suppose there's a fair chance you didn't
know this. October 4th is "Walk To School
Day." I didn't know and this is the 20th year
it's being observed!
Supporters say it's a day to promote
physical fitness and a clean environment!
And they claim the ranks of those actually
walking are growing.
There are special efforts to promote
walking including the "walking bus project."
That involves groups of students walking
together escorted by an adult or adults.
I find this day especially unique since
I walked to school nearly every day of my
school years. There were a few exceptions
during High School when I got my driver's
license and a car was available.
I never rode a school bus all the years
I was in school! Not only did I not ride a
bus to and from school, I walked home
(or to the closest bakery/pizza place)
every day at lunch time, We weren't
required to stay in school during lunch
back in my day.
The only time I ever boarded a
school bus was to do a news story about
State troopers who were cracking down on
drivers who tried to pass the bus while it
was loading kids.
I never minded walking. That said
my elementary school was two blocks
away and my Jr. High was just three and
a half. The High School was over a mile
from home and you had to cross a busy
street (highway in town) to get there. But
we all made it.
Consolidation has made it a lot
harder for students to consider walking
but I'm glad to see they're making efforts
here and there.
Hope we see some of those efforts
around here and that all your NEWS is
good!
