A KICK IN THE RIBS!
It would see that one of our favorite
summer eating spots is about to become
a "Used to be!"
My son-in-law passed along a notice
Friday that Kundla's open pit bar-b-q
in Hamlin is up for sale and will not be
opening under its old manager this
season!
Kundla's has been a regular stop for
our family and friends every summer
where we dinned on delicious pork
ribs, bar-b-q chicken, French fries,
and an occasional helping of rice
pudding.
The owner, Ed Kundla, had a staff
of young folks who cooked up the ribs
on a long brick open bar-b-q pit with
a separate set up for the chicken.
The delicious odor used to draw
people off the nearby Route 590 and you
could usually count on a big crowd
sharing the picnic tables that filled the
property on Fridays, Saturdays, and
Sundays from Mother's Day through
mid October.
Ironically we had passed it for
about a year or so when we had a camper
at Lake Wallenpaupack. I was watching
the traffic closely and never saw the
place but always notice the smell
in that section of Hamlin.
Then, one day, the traffic halted in
just the right spot for me to look to
my right and spot the place.
The odor and large gathering
of motorcycles was a sure tip off
there was something good there!
It now joins my personal list of
"Used to be" places like the Knotty
Pines in Hazleton where friends
gathered to meet and dine.
Kundla's, to me, was like the
"Hot Dog Johnnies" of northeastern
Pennsylvania.
Hope a buyer comes along that
recognizes the tremendous potential
of continuing the business.....and that
all your NEWS is good!
