AND THEY CALL THE WIND...BEAUFORT!
I know. You thought they called the wind
Mariah.
Not so. And to prove it May 7th is "Beaufort
Scale Day." Don't let the name scare you. One
doesn't have to step on this scale!
This scale relates to wind speed on land and
sea.
It was developed by an Irish fellow, Francis
Beaufort, way back in 1805.
Up till then weather observations, especially
at sea, varied depending on who was telling
the story. One guy's "stiff breeze" would be
another guy's "soft breeze."
Beaufort's scale standardized the
measurements.
I got a taste of the system years back
when wind conditions off Cape Cod produced
waves 4 feet high. Mt Dad and I went fishing.
I was OK with the wind whipped waves until
my Dad lit his cigar!
As you know observers are still trying todevelop a similar scale that can be applied to
politicians to determine if they're whistling
in the wind or completely full of hot air!
Hope they prefect that before election
day and that all your NEWS is good!
