Shooters & Ducks!
It's April 7th gang. "World
Marbles Day!" No kidding!
It's got quite a history. As the
story goes the day, always on
Good Friday, evolves from
a dispute between two Englishmen
who were courting the same girl
in 1588! They decided to engage
in various ports competition to
decide which of them would
continue their quest for her hand.
The final, and deciding game,
was marbles and World Marble
Day was born. It is still observed
all over the world, especially in
England where it originated. Of
course there are other major
competitions including one
held in Wildwood, New Jersey
every year. Smaller marbles,
sometimes called "ducks" are
placed in a circle and contestants
try to knock them out with larger
one called "Shooters." I'd explain
in all to you but, as my wife often
points out, I lost all my marbles
years ago! Hope you'll celebrate
World Marble Day and that all your
NEWS is good.
