I hope you get to read today's blog before you head off
to Brazil. I'm guessing a few of you are going there to
celebrate "World Environmental Day." No?
Well I guess you don't have to. Brazil may be the host
country for this year's event but there's no reason you
can't mark the occasion right around here.
"World Environmental Day" was established by the
United Nations back in June of 1972. It was just a few
weeks before the environment, specifically the river
environment, took over Wyoming Valley by way of the
Tropical Storm Agnes Flood!
There's a new theme for "World Environmental Day"
each year. This year it's....."Green Economy, Does It
Include You?"
And while leaders from all over the world will be
talking about the environment in Brazil......some folks
in Lackawanna County will be getting ready to enjoy
it!
The River Corridor Association will be hosting it's
annual "River Fest" in Scranton this coming Saturday.
It's an event designed to show people that one of
the best ways to learn about the environment is to
get out and play in it!
The Lackawanna River, like the Susquehanna, is
a lot cleaner than it used to be.
So, during riverfest, it will be filled with unusual
looking vessels as people compete in the annual
Regatta. It's not often you get to see Dragons or
"cars" floating down the stream to see which can
float to the finish line first.
A buddy of mine and I once set out to sail the
Susquehanna from Wilkes-Barre to Berwick in a
canoe. Unfortunately it was a "one man canoe" and
our voyage only really started after we readjusted
ourselves and our equipment after initially sinking in
front of the boat launch in Kirby Park!
We got a good taste of the environment that day!
You should too. I mean, besides running through
all the rain. There's a lot of ways to enjoy nature
around these parts.
I hope you're celebrating the environment and
that all your NEWS is good!
