BLOG FOR SEPT 9-10th
AFTER JUST A COUPLE DAYS ON VINALHAVEN
ISLAND WE DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
SO....WE WENT TO VISIT A NEARBY ISLAND! CLEVER
YES?
OF COURSE, TO GET TO AN ISLAND, YOU'VE GOT
TO GO OVER WATER.
NORTH HAVEN IS LESS THAN A MILE OFF THE
COAST OF VINALHAVEN. TO GET THERE YOU CALL
BROWN'S BOAT WHARF, JUST ACROSS THE CHANNEL,
AND THEY SEND A SKIFF OVER TO PICK YOU UP.
A SKIFF, OF COURSE, IS A VERY LARGE ROW BOAT
WITH A MOTOR. IT GIVES YOU A QUICK LIFT TO THE
OTHER SIDE, ONCE YOU'RE ABLE TO GET ONE FOOT
INSIDE THEN JUMP, AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE, ONTO
WHAT MIGHT LOOSELY BE DESCRIBED AS A SEAT.
THIS METHOD OF TRANSIT SEEMS ESPECIALLY
INTERESTING SINCE NORTH HAVEN IS DESCRIBED AS
A PLACE OF "NEW MONEY PEOPLE." I HAVE TO BELIEVE
THOSE FOLKS HAVE THEIR OWN VESSELS TO
GET ACROSS. I CAN'T PICTURE THEM HOPPING ON
BOARD A SKIFF!
PERHAPS THEY USE THE LARGE SCHOONER THAT
IMPRESSED US SO MUCH! I'M NOT SURE IF WE WERE
MORE IMPRESSED BY IT'S SIZE OR THE FACT IT WAS
SAILING DIRECTLY TOWARDS OUR SMALL SKIFF!
FORTUNATELY THE SKIPPER OF THE SCHOONER
CHANGED COURSE BEFORE WE COULD BECOME A MINIATURE
VERSION OF THE ANDRIA DORA AND STOCKHOLM!
ANYHOW THOSE "NEW MONEY PEOPLE" DO GET
ACROSS!
I FIGURED I'D FIT IN VERY WELL THERE. MY WIFE
JUST GAVE ME A FEW BUCKS THE OTHER DAY SO,
THE WAY I FIGURE IT,THAT MAKE ME "NEW MONEY."
MAYBE THEY MEAN A LOT OF "NEW MONEY."
WE SAW ONE NEW HOME THAT COST 30 MILLION
DOLLARS TO BUILD. WE GOT TO DRIVE CLOSE BY BUT
WEREN'T ALLOWED TO STEP. THAT'S TOO BAD! THERE
WERE SEVERAL BIG APPLE TREES THERE THAT LOOKED
READY FOR HARVEST TO ME. I THOUGHT I MIGHT HELP
BY EATING ONE OR TWO. OH WELL!
AT LEAST I GOT SOME ICE CREAM AT THE LOCAL
SNACK BAR. AND, "NEW MONEY" OR NOT, I DID HAVE
THE $7 BUCKS TO COVER THE SKIFF RIDE
OVER TO THE ISLAND AND BACK HOME AGAIN!
HOPE YOU'VE HAD SMOOTH SAILING AND THAT ALL
YOUR NEWS IS GOOD!
