        10-4 GOOD BUDDY!

   It's October 4th, also know as "10-4
Day.:
   It is, of course, the 4th day of the
tenth month. But the designation
10-4 is far better known these days
for a radio code that means "OK"
or "acknowledged."
   Years ago somebody realized it
was often easier to understand
numbers or sets of numbers as
opposed to certain words when
communicating by radio.
    Police and Emergency Respondents
came up with a system that became know
as "The Ten Codes."
    Part of the reason for using the
codes was to make sure the messsages
were understood. But another part of
the reason was to fool those listening
in. Like news reporters!
     It wasn't quite as clever as they
thought.
    If the police dispatcher asked a
car in the field what his 10-20 was
and the car answered "I'm at 3rd and
Elm Street" it didn't take an
investigative journalist too long to
figure out 10-20 meant....Where are
you?
      If that wasn't enough guys like
Broderick Crawford starting using
the codes on police shows like
"Highway Patrol" so the secrecy 
went right out the window.
      These days you're more likely
to hear the ten code from truckers
who are still using CB radios.
       Anyhow it's October 4th so
whatever your 10-20 I hope your're
having a 10-4 day and that all your
NEWS is good!
