REMEMBERING MAY 30TH
Through much of my life May
30th was Memorial Day. Although
when I was a kid most folks still
called it Decoration Day. Strange
how both the name and date
changed over the years! Decoration
Day began around the end of the
Civil War. Several communities,
including Boalsburg, Pennsylvania,
claim to have been the first to observe
the holiday although the records
officially give the credit to Waterloo,
New York. The name "Decoration Day"
came from the practice of decorating
the graves of Civil War veterans. It
sort of evolved into Memorial Day
over the years. The date was
changed to the last Monday in May
when it became an official Federal
holiday. That wasn't until 1971 when
the Uniform Monday Holiday Law
was adopted to give federal workers
4 long weekends during the year,
The main purpose of the day, of course,
has never changed. It's to pay tribute
to all of those who sacrificed their lives
for our country. So whatever the day is
or was called, make sure you make time
between bar-b-q's and family gatherings,
take time to remember those for whom
the holiday was created! Hope you do,
that you're well, and that all your NEWS
is hood!
