They Shoot Horses... Don't They?

     FRIDAY, JUNE 12TH

 They Shoot Horses....Don't They?

    No. I'm not talking about my two
sore feet. In this case I'm talking
about my favorite horses.
    They are, or at least they were, in
the tiny engine that powered my little
Miata.
     Two weeks or so ago I noticed
that engine overheating while we
were returning from a day trip. I
nursed it home and then to a local
garage where mechanics flushed the
radiator and put in a new thermostat.
    Two days later, while on another
ride, the temperature gauge began
to climb again! Nursing it home that
time took several more "cool off"
stops. My temperature was pretty
hot by then too!
    The call I got yesterday basically
told me the "patient" was in bad
shape and may need a transplant to
survive.
    I'd say "Go ahead" in a second if
I thought my Health Insurance
Company would accept my joy ride
as......... "my baby." I'm thinking that
could be a tough sell.
    I know I haven't been able to claim
it as a dependent on my income tax.
    My best bet may be a Donor. Except
I'm not quite sure there's anyone out
there willing to actually "donate" the
parts that will be required.
   Anyhow it's in the hands of a
specialist right now to explore
possibilities. And, by the way, I drove
it there so I don't think we'll have to
shoot it!
    Hope I can drive it away as well

Too Many Cooks?

       THURSDAY, JUNE 11TH

         TOO MANY COOKS?

   There's an old saying. "Too many
cooks spoil the broth."
   My wife is the only cook in our
kitchen. But, yesterday, I decided
she should have a day off.
   While she sat on the front porch
reading I set out to fetch the evening
meal.
   I decided to give the new 5 Guys
Burgers and Fries a try.
   The place only opened a few weeks
ago. But everybody seems to have
found it because there was no
shortage of customers.
    There was also no shortage of
"cooks" in the kitchen there. Not
as many as the stock photo
provided by the company. But at
least 8 behind the counter every
time I looked! And nobody was
sitting around! These guys and gals
were as busier as the folks on an
auto assembly line. And some of
those burgers looked as big as
hubcaps!
      Even with a good sized crowd
on hand my wait wasn't all that
long and the meal made it worth
the time I spent there.
     I don't know which of the 5, or
8 "guys" filled my order for fries,
but the place passed my acid
test for a good Burger joint. There
seemed to be as many French fries
at the bottom of my bag as there
were in the container actually
holding the French fries order! 
     That way you can eat a hefty
portion on the way home while
the container looks filled!
      Hope we can finish all this

Is There A Doctor In The House?

     WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10TH

IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?

    I've made my contributions to the
Medical community this week. But
I was happy to do so!
    Thanks to a cancelled appointment
my Podiatrist was able to see me and
my sore foot a day ahead of expected!
    The diagnosis, Capsulitis, an
inflammation of the ligaments in my
toe. My old buddy Frank Andrews
suggested I call a Tow truck!
   The doctor decided a shot of
cortisone might be a better approach.
    The foot, though still very
sensitive, was a lot better yesterday
when I limped into my Family
Doctor's office for my 6 month,
10,000 mile check up.
    He, like many of you, believe my
occasional foot problems are a
result of the Gout. I'll be getting
some tests in a couple of weeks
that should tell the tale one way
or another.
    Then there's my Cholesterol
levels. Seems there's good and
bad cholesterol. I've got some of
both. The Doc says there's just a
little bit too much of the bad
stuff.
    I told him about a recent
article suggesting that eating
kielbasa was a good treatment.
I don't think he believed me!
    Come to think of it maybe
the article just said something
about kielbasa tasting good. I
thought it was worth a try!
    Anyhow I limped away from
the appointment with three sets
of tests I've got to have done.
     I thought I was done with
tests after High School!
     Hope I pass.....so that all
of my NEWS is good!

DOUBLE D DAY!

     TUESDAY, JUNE 9TH

        DOUBLE D DAY!

  No. It's not my birthday. Although I
did go by the radio name Double Dee
during my few years as a DJ.
  The Double D we're congratulating
today is a lot more famous than I'll
ever be!
   He is Donald Duck!
   I spotted "Donald Duck Day" on
two separate listings of unusual
June holidays.
   I was surprised to find one of those
sites filled with conflicting information
about Donald's actual birthday. I guess
that's because he's a Cartoon character!
   June 9th is listed because that's the
date he first appeared in a Disney
Cartoon. That was in 1934. But the same
site suggests that Donald was actually
born one March 13th., probably in 1914.
   So he may actually be 101 this year!
   Either way he's one lucky duck to be
around for so long and still be so
popular! And most of he time you
can't understand a word he's saying!
   Of course that hasn't hindered some
of our current TV reporters!
    And just about the time you think you
know a character that's been around for
so long you learn something new!
    Did you know, for instance that Donald
has a middle name?
     Well he does! Donald Duck's middle
name is "Fauntleroy".  Boy this on
line information stuff is really cool!
     So Happy Birthday Donald!
    Hope you'll all be celebrating, and that

The Old Soft Shoe!

       MONDAY, JUNE 8TH

      THE OLD SOFT SHOE!

     I'm old enough to remember the
last days of vaudeville. The man
with straw hat and cane doing a
little soft shoe (tap dance) on stage
to some pleasant tune.
     I also recall, probably in
Elementary School music, joining
my classmates in a verse or two of
"Hand Me Down, My Walking
Cane."
     I never expected I'd need one,
either for tap dance or walking,
but I found one extremely handy
as I made my way around on
Sunday!
     For the third time since visiting
Ireland last year I've come down
with some sort of inflammation in
my foot! The pain radiates throughout
the foot making everything from
walking, standing, to sleeping quite
a challenge.
     My wife produced a cane, once
used by her father, to help me along
through the weekend till I can see
the doctor and beg for another
cortisone shot.
     It did help. Admittedly I was
tempted to break into dance on
one or two occasions. But, since
most steps produced pain, I decided
sitting down might be a better idea!
    Perhaps, after healing, I'll
consider some of that old soft shoe!
Maybe I can bring back vaudeville!
    Hope I get that chance SOON...and
that all your NEWS is good!

A Caution Flag!

           SUNDAY, JUNE 7TH

           THE CAUTION FLAG!

   There's a big race at Pocono International
Raceway today. Thousands of spectators
head to the track each year to watch the
pros put the pedal to the metal and keep
turning left until somebody ends up in
the winner's circle.
    Many of the fans are fanatics!
    We think we saw one yesterday. Either
that or one of the race drivers got caught
up in one of our Interstate traffic jams
and found himself very late for the race!
     Either way somebody should have
called for a Caution Flag!
     I was driving my grandson on Route
115 in Bear Creek Township heading
towards his friend's baseball game.
     After several accidents, a couple
of them fatal, the speed limit on that
stretch of highway was set at 45mph.
    That's exactly what we were doing
when the black Porsche ignored the
No Passing signs and narrowly
missed us as he flew by at what I'd
estimate to be double our speed.
No chance for road rage here. He
was long gone and fast!
     Guess the guy wanted to show
everybody else on the road that he
belongs in the lead. That makes
his a ....Front Porsche!
     It's one of those times when you
get a picture in your mind. A vision
of someone in a badge standing
along side the vehicle that just
whizzed by, asking for the driver's
license and registration.
     I have no idea if that happened
somewhere up the road. There are
extra police patrols near the
Raceway during these big events.
     Hope one of them spotted our
speedster and gave him a souvenir! 
     That would really be good NEWS!

   
   

Outstanding In Their Field!

        SATURDAY, JUNE 6TH

   OUTSTANDING IN THEIR FIELD!

     I've been know to complain about
kids who spend too much time on cell
phones and not enough playing in their
backyard.
    The other day, however, my wife and
I stopped by a recreational complex in
Bear Creek  where kids from the local
Charter School were holding their annual
Field Day. My grand daughter was one
of those students and we've tried to get
to Field Day each year to see how she
and her fellow students are doing when
it comes to good old fashion outdoor
exercise.
    I don't think we've got much to worry
about!
    The students were challenged with
exercises that ranged from running,
jumping hurdles, and throwing balls, to
jump rope!
     No sooner had they completed one
task when they raced off to another
event.
     I doubt if our area nuke plant was
putting out as much energy as I saw
on that field! If only we could harness
it!
     Finally fatigue set in! Not for the
kids! For me. I got tired out just
watching!
     Hope I can catch my breath again
