HAIL THE HOAGIE!

HAIL THE HOAGIE!
May 5th is much more that Cinco
de Mayo! It is also National Hoagie
Day!
There is no one separate recipe
for a hoagie although most have a
few things in common.
It can be hot or cold, luncheon meat
or meatballs, and will usually contain
any of a variety of cheeses, topped
with just about anything you choose.
I come from Hazleton where
hoagie's were considered one of the
four basic food groups.
They were hoagies (usually from
Third Base Luncheonette), Pizza
(usually from Snape's), Hot Dogs
(always from Jimmy's) and Bar-B-Q
(from the original Knotty Pines recipe.).
Say "hoagie" in Hazleton and
everybody knew what you were
talking about. But while the sandwich
is basically the same from one area
to another the name is not!
In upstate New York they're
called Grinders. In Boston they're
Subs, or Submarine sandwiches.
Here and there if you want one you'll
have to ask for a Hero!
If you want one on this Cinco d
Mayo just ask for a hoagie. The
Spanish translation is the same (at
least here in northeastern PA.)
Hope you'll enjoy one and that
all your NEWS is good!
