YOU'VE COME A LONG WAY BABY!
Back in 1968 the Phillip Morris Company
began a cigarette adveertising campaign
aimed specifically at women. The slogan
for Virdinia Slims was "You've come a
long way baby." In a sense, January 22nd
marks the anniversary of that "journey."
In 1908 a New York City alderman came
up with a law that banned women from
smoking in public. It went into effect on
January 21st that year. The following day
a police officer spotted Katie Mulcahey
lighting up. She was arrested on the spot
and fined five dollars in court. Katie was
not aware of the new law. But she did not
go quietly! Katie told the judge "I have
just as much right to smoke as you do."
When the story hit the press must people
sided with Katie. Within a month the
mayor vetoed the law which, in effect,
went up in smoke! The last cigarette
ad on television was aired on the Johnny
Carson show on January 1st of 1971.
Health officials proved that smoking
was bad, for both men and women.
But you've got to hand it to Katie for
speaking out on behalf women's rights!
Hope you're remembering Katie but
giving up smoking and that all your
NEWS is good.
