LADIES & GENTELMEN OF THE JURY!
Did you hear about William Penn's trial?
What's that!? The guy who founded
Pennsylvania put on trial!? Yep! And the
outcome of that trial has had a lasting
effect on many of us! You see back in 1670
in merry old England William Penn and
William Meade were placed under arrest
for preaching to several hundred quakers.
They were charged with disturbing the peace,
disorderly y conduct, and "riot!" A jury found
them guilty of only one of the charges. But the
court wasn't happy with that result so it ordered
the jurors to deliberate again. They did. And,
this time, they found Penn and Meade not guilty
of all the charges! The court was so angry it jailed
the jurors! They sued and won, resulting in the
principal that jurors are the sole deciders on the
question of guilt or innocence and cannot be
punished for the decision they make! Pretty
