IF YOU GO OUT IN THE WOODS TODAY...

Come on! You know the rest. "If you go out
in the woods today you're sure of a big surprise!"
But it's not really a surprise is it? This is Teddy
Bear Picnic Day!
The story of the Teddy Bear dates back to
President Teddy Roosevelt who, the story goes,
refused to shoot a bear that was tied to a tree
by supporters who wanted to assure him a
successful hunt.
Toy store owners, Morris and Rose Michtom,
wrote to President Roosevelt after news of the
incident filled the newspapers. The asked for
permission to call their new stuffed toys
"Teddy Bears"
Then came the popular song "Teddy Bear's
Picnic" and the rest, as they say, is history.
July 10th was officially named National
Teddy Bear's Picnic Day in 1988. Although the
"holiday" has faded in popularity in the United
States, Canada, Europe, and Australia still
proclaim the day a national holiday bringing
parents and children together.
          My youngest granddaughter may well
be celebrating the day with "Yogi" a Teddy
Bear who has been handed down from my
son to his daughter,
Wish I had saved mine for the
occasion! But my Teddy, like "Puff the
magic dragon" simply vanished one day
many years ago.
Too bad. I always enjoy a good
picnic! Hope you'll be celebrating, with
or without your bear, and that all your NEWS
is good.
