THIS IS EXCITING! (I THINK.)

   THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2022

       THIS IS EXCITING! I THINK.

Well September has arrived and, with it,

"International Enthusiam Week!" You are

encouraged to throw yourself into something

full force this week. Perhaps a hobby, your

work, or some sport. Pick something you

really enjoy. That will make it easier. I

can't tell you a lot about this 7 day campaign.

We don't know how it got started or who it

was that came up with the whole idea. Maybe

they weren't really too enthusiatic about it.

Thar said, this is the week, so really get into

something and don't hold back! Hope it works

out for you and that all your NEWS is good!

FAME BY MISFORTUNE!

   WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31, 2022

        FAME BY MISFORTUNE!

Some people spend a good part of their

like seeking fame. And many attain it as

entertainers, writers, poets. or sports

figures. But sometimes fame comes

to people who never sought it. Such

was the case with Mary Nichols. Mary,

from England, married Bill Nichols, a

printer's machinist, when she was just 18.

24-years-later she had become a

prostitute. That's when became famous

by misfortune. You see on this date in

1888 Mary Nichols became the first

known victim of Jack the Ripper!!!!

I just thought you ought to know!

Hope all your NEWS is good!

IT'S ALIVE! IT'S ALIVE!!

   TUESDAY, AUGUST 30, 2022

       IT'S ALIVE! IT'S ALIVE!

Those were the exciting words spoken

by Dr. Frankenstein shouted out when he

realized the man he created from dead

bodies was breathing and moving!

August 30th is Frankenstein Day!

You might think such an observance

belongs on Halloween! Actually there

are three separate Frankenstein holidays!

There's Frankenstein Friday, National

Frankenstein Day, and today..Franenstein

Day. This August day was selected because

it marks the 1797 birthday of Mary

Shelly who wrote the book

"Frankenstein" in 1818. So there you

have it! Three Frankenstein holidays!

And each is a Monster of a day! Hope

you're observing the day and that all

your NEWS is good!

PUTTING THINGS TOGETHER!

   MONDAY, AUGUST 29, 2022

  PUTTING THINGS TOGETHER!

I've always been impressed by inventors!

People who see a need and come up with an

idea, often a machine, to address that need.

People like Bell and Edison, and Whitcomb

Judson. You never heard of Judson? Well,

he was an American. He was a machine

salesman, a machinist, and an inventor.

Judson came up with 30 patents over a

16 year period. Most of them, as you might

expect, involved improvements for various

machines. But one dating from August of

1891, is still used by most of us every

day. And it should be remembered....

especially by you guys out there. You see

Judson invented the zipper!!! Just thought

you should know! Hope you're well and

that all your NEWS is good!

TAKE YOUR MEDICINE!

     SUNDAY, AUGUST 28, 2022

       TAKE YOUR MEDICINE!

         Throughout the years pharmacists

have been coming up with concoctions

to help us deal with what ales us. But

sometimes their products don't really

seem like medicine! Such was the case

in 1837 when two pharmacists, John Lea

and William Perrins came up with a mixture

that was too harsh to ingest. They stored it

in a basement but discovered the taste

had changed after the liquid fermented!

And on this day in 1837 they marketed their

new product... Worcestershire Sauce!

In was on this day in 1893 that pharmacist

Caleb Bradham came up with a medicine to

aid digestion. He called it "Brad's drink."

The name was eventually changed though

and you know it now as Pepsi Cola! Ah the

wonderful world of pharmaceuticals! Hope

you're taking all your medicians, that you're

well, and that all your NEWS is good!

OUT AND ABOUT!

   SATURDAY, AUGUST 27, 2022

            OUT AN ABOUT!

People who follow my blog or

my Facebook posts know my wife and

I like to travel near and far. It's amazing

how many great attractions there are

in our own area. And even more

amazing that many people don't know

they're there. We found one with our

visit to Lakeland Orchards and Cidery

in Lackawanna County! My wife and

our 7-year-old grandson checked out

the place on Friday. It's a treasure!

Basically a farm, Lakeland Orchards

offers visitors a chance to pick their

own vegetables. You fride into the

fields and fill you sample bage with a

few of the vegetables you enjoy. That

alone would be worth the visit. But

wait! There's more! There's a Scrambler

amusement ride, a Merry-Go-Round,

a station where you can make huge

bubbles, a pen full of goats, a Ball

Crawl filled with corn, and too many

others to tell about them all! But

there's one other I don't want to leave

out! There is a Butterfly House where

you can enjoy the company of these

beautiful creatures. Lakeland is

about to open a brand new attraction.

A one point two mile train ride

through the orchards that will also

carry passengers to a holiday light

show. Friday marked our first visit

to Lakeland Orchards and Cidery.

It won't be our last! Hope you'll

get a chance to visit some time and

that all your NEWS is good!

ON A ROLL!

    FRIDAY, AUGUST 26TH., 2022
                     ON A ROLL!

     If you're a regular blog reader. that's
great! Especially today! August 26th is
"National Toilet Paper Day!"
     This everyday commodity is usually
taken for granted.  It's difficult to imagine
it hasn't been around forever!
A guy named Joseph Gayetty gets
the credit for producing the first
commercially available toilet paper in
this country. That was in 1857. That's
38 years before the Sears Catalog came
along. (You older readers will have to
explain the connection between the two
for younger ones!)
As I noted, wed tend to take toilet
paper for granted. We expect it to be
there when we visit a public rest room
and it's more than just disappointing
when we find an empty roll! Of course
when the pandemic hit the first thing
that seemed to be missing was toilet
paper. Iy was very hard to find as
horders bought up all they could find!
If your home is anything like
ours there's a sort of waiting war to
see who will replace a roll that's
running out. How long can we
extend the life of that rapidly
decreasing supply?
We do have an agreement on
proper installation! Our roll feeds
from the top front in our dispenser.
I suspect, at one time or another,
all of you will be absorbing.....I mean
observing this holiday sometime
during the day!
       Toilet paper shuld always make
you feel calm, After all, it's always
found in...a Restroom!
Hope you've got a full roll and
that all your NEWS is good!

THE BIRTH OF "FAKE NEWS?"

   THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 2022

   THE BIRTH OF "FAKE NEWS?"

As a long time reporter I can assure

you the term "fake news" is a lot more

political than accurate. To many, news

becomes "fake" when it reports something

the reader, or watcher, or listner dosen't

agree with! That said there have certainly

been examples of fake news. The greatest

example bega on this very day in 1835!

That's the day a series of six articles began

in a New York City newspaper called "The

Sun." They delt with the supposed discovery

of life on the moon and were falsely attributed

to a famous astronomer of the day!  The articles

described animals on the lunar surface and even

winger humanoids! Five years after the series

was published a reporter who had been working

at the Sun admitted to being the author! It was,

perhaps, both the beginning of what we now

call fake news as well as the adage "Don't

believe everything you read!" Now, of course,

we have the internet where everything is true.

Right? Hope you analyze before your agree

and that all your NEWS is good!

ONE SHARP HOLIDAY!

    WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2022

            ONE SHARP HOLIDAY!

It seems there's an unofficial "holiday"

for everything! August 24th is no exception!

This is "National Knife Day!"

Knives have been around since the dawn

of man. The originals were made from rocks

and animal bones. They evolved into speciality

knives for all kinds of special uses. There are

knives for cakes and knives for steaks. There

are butter knives. There are carving knives.

And let's not forget the all purpose Swiss

Arm Knife! This a day to appreciate knives.

Tools for all kinds of jobs these days. So, on

this August 24th., .....have a "Knive Day!"

Hope you place them on the table where

they're suppose to be, that you're careful

with the sharp ones, and that all your NEWS

is good!

FRIENDS!

   TUESDAY, AUGUST 23, 2022

                    FRIENDS!

I've heard it said that one can't have too

manhy friends. I, however, am rethinking

that thought! I have thousands of "Friends"

on Facebook. It began with a corps group

of good friends and family then expanded

to friends of friends and family. I've added

hundreds of people who followed me through

the years on television and even radio. And

I get several requests from people who want

to be added to my Facebook Friend's List

every single day. I automatically turn

down those requests when they

some from people in other countries with

whom I have no connection at all. This past

week though I received Friend Requests

from two very old friends.

It's nice to reconnect with freinds you haven't

seen or heard from in a long time. But I have

to tell you I have rejected those requests. I'm

afraid if I reconnect they'll want me to come

to visit or set up a date for lunch. Invitations

such as those may sould appealing but, as it

happens, both of those requests come from

old friends who passed away within the last

year or so! Unless Facebook has expanded

beyond this world I'm thinking those requests

are not sincere! Hope you're still my friend

and that all your NEWS is good!

WATCHING THE LOCH!

   MONDAY, AUGUST 22, 2022

      WATCHING THE LOCH!

There didn't seem to be too much

special about this date until I did some
research and learned that one of the
longest living legends started on
August 22nd in the year 565!
That's when Saint Columba, the man
credited with bringing Christianity to
Scotland., claimed to see a monster on
Loch Ness!
I was in Scotland in 2014 and had
the opportunity of cruising on Loch
Ness. Everybody was hoping to catch
a glimpse of "Nessie." But even with
bottom searching sonar all we saw was
the beautiful lake and the surrounding
mountains.
         I took a few photos but haven't
really looked at them all. I'll post a couple
for you.
         Don't believe everything  you hear
but, on the other hand, don't blink! You
might miss something!!!
Hope you're well and that all
your NEWS is good.

HOW OLD IS "OLD?"

   SUNDAY, AUGUST 21, 2022

        HOW OLD IS "OLD?"

It's August 21st everybody and this is

"Senior Citizens Day!" When I was growing

up I considered anyone older was a senior

citizen. My parents. Certainly my grand mother.

But that designation has changed a lot over the

years. At one time retirement age qualified one

as a senior. That age used to be 65. But now you

can reture at 62. That's the age one has to be to

buy a Senior Pass to our national parks. But

AARP , which has been representing senior's

interests for years, welcomes members once

they hit 50! I finally realized and admitted

I was a senior during a snow storm a few years

back. It was very bad and people were being'asked

to call their senior neighbors to make sure they were

all right. I picked up my cell phone and called

my home phone. And, yes, I was OK! Hope

you're well, whatever your age, and that all

your NEWS is good.

TURN YOUR RADIO ON!

 SATURDAY, AUGUST 20TH., 2022
        TURN YOUR RADIO ON!

For me it's a walk down Memory
Lane. August 20th is National Radio Day.
The bulk of my 63 years in the
media have been in television. But
I got my start in radio. And I've got
a lot of memories from those "radio
daze."
I learned a lot from the years I
spent as a DJ. How to Ad Lib for
instance! You had to think and
act fast when things didn't go just
right.
I remember reading a list of
Basketball scores. Suddenly, in
the middle of the list, I hit this one
.
( School name)  36
Pennsylvania School for the Dead, 20.
What the wire service writer meant,
of course, was Pennsylvania School
for The Deaf.
      With my microphone still turned
on I said...."Gee, I'm surprised they
scored at all."
Local radio was generally a lot
of fun back then. If you were
innovative you could do some neat
things. One day, at WBRX in Berwick,
I was working the control board when
a parade started coming down Main
Street. I grabbed an extra long
microphone cord, walked to a hallway
window, and did a "play by play" on
the line of march.
Local radio was very local! I still
remember WAZL in Hazleton still
doing the Mine Working Schedules
for area coal mines and breakers when
I was getting started in 1959.
We carried the New York Yankees
when I worked at WTHT (also in
Hazleton). When Yankee announcer
Mel Allan paused for stations on the
network to identify themselves, I'd
say "Thank you Mel" as though we
knew each other before giving our
call letters.
Problem was, we were a "Daytime
Station" and had to go off the air at
dusk. But, sometimes, the ballgames
weren't over at dusk!  I'd have to
turn off the transmitter and run out
of the place as soon as possible to
avoid having to answer the telephone!
I broadcast from a closet at
WNAK the day President Kennedy
was shot. That's where we kept our
Associated Press Teletype and it was
the fastest way for me to air the
latest developments.
       Our shining hour came just
before and in the weeks after the
1972 flood in Wyoming Valley when
a dozen area radio stations joined
forces to provide information on
the emergency. One headline read
"Radio Was The Hero Of The Hour!"
So here's a tip of the hat to the
folks on and behind the microphones
then, and now, as we observe
National Radio Day!
Hope the School for the Dead
is still playing strong...and that all
your NEWS is good!

EXTRA INNINGS!

    FRIDAY, AUGUST 19, 2022

           EXTRA INNINGS!!!

The Little League World Series is

underway in South Williamsport. I thought

it appopriate to do something on baseball

today. And this date, August 19th, provides

a prefect time to do so!

For those who don't know, Christy

Mathewson was one of the greatest

baseball pitchers of all time. He's on

the list of the top ten major league pitchers

and was one of the original 5 players

inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

For us, he was also a "local boy,' born in

Factoryville where he is honored with a

festival every year. He was known as

"Bix Six" and "The Christian Gentelman."

Seems ironic then that, on this very day in

1917 he, then managing the Cincinati Reds,

and legendary New York Giants Manager

John McGraw, got themselves arrested!

They had planned a special baseball game

for August 19th to benefit soldiers about

to ship overseas in Worle War I. They

even arranged to have a band play for

the soldiers before the game. Problem

was, August 19th was a Sunday and New

York's "Blue Laws" were still in effect!

So McGraw and our "Christian Gentelman"

were arrested for staging a baseball game

on the Sabbath! They both went to court

and could have faced heavty fines were in

not for an understanding judge who

dismissed the charges....setting in place

a police that allowed baseball to be played

on Sundays! Not an umpire,,,but a great

call! Hope you're we;; and that all your NEWS

is good!

BAD POETRY DAY!

     THURSDAY, AUGUST 18TH., 2022
             BAD POETRY DAY!.

August 18th is "Bad Poetry Day!"
Heaven knows we've all heard our share
of bad poetry over the years. I've written
plenty myself!
Little birdie in the cage, How I wonder
what your age..........is. I tried to pass that
off as blank verse.
There have probably been a million
bad poems beginning with the line "Roses
are red." They're still coming up with new
ones!
My first exposure came from my uncle
who was fond of repeating  "Little Billy
hung his sister. She was gone before they missed
her. Always up to naughty tricks, little Billy's
only 6."
I wrote about this day in a previous blog
and listed a couple of the bad poems I wrote.
But in that last blog I promised I'd share with
you one with which I won a contest  aboard a
train roaring through the Canadian Rockies.
Poetry in motion if you will!
We were traveling next to a river that sees
huge Salmon running upstream in season and
our coach attendant challenged us to come up
a poem with the fish as its subject.
As I recall 4 or 5 of us entered and at
least 3 would qualify for honors in Bad
Poetry Day.
Mine was more serious so even though
the day is suppose to be about bad poems I
humbly submit mine for your reviews.

        THE BEAUTY OF THE RIVER
HIDES A STORY JUST BELOW.
OF THE MIGHTY NORTHERN
SALMON, AND THE PLACES IT
MUST GO.
         IT'S JOURNEY TAKES IT
WESTWARD ..... THE OCEAN
DEPTHS TO ROAM.
         BUT AFTER JUST A FEW
SHORT YEARS, MOTHER NATURE
CALLS IT HOME.
        IT BATTLES RAGING
RAPIDS AND BARRIERS MADE BY
MAN, TO REACH IT'S DESTINATION,
THE PLACE ITS LIFE BEGAN.
        THERE SHE'LL COMPLETE LIFE'S
JOURNEY, IN THE WATERS NEATH THE
SUN.  WHILE THE GREAT CREATOR
WATCHES, SMILES.....AND SAYS
"WELL DONE."

Hope your life rhymes well and
that all your NEWS is good.

JUST MISSED!

   WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17, 2022

               JUST MISSED!

It's another of those unofficial "holidays"

I like tu tell you about. But I can't celebrate!

August 17th is "Baby Boomers Appreciation

Day!"  But, technically, "Baby Boomers" are

those born between 1945 and 1965 and I came

around three years before that generation

started. That makes me part of the "Silent

Generation." Of curse. I haven't tended to be

silent for many years. I suppose I kind of

thought of myself as part of the "Boomers

Crowd" since, during my DJ years, I played

most of the songs that entertained those kids!

In fact a lot of names from the "Silent Generation"

entertained the "Boomers!" John Lennon, George

Harrison, and Elvis! Sports figures like Muhammas

Ali and movic action star Bruce Lee all hailed from

the "Silent Generation" but were big with the

"Boomers!" But today is yours "kids" so enjoy

your selves and may all your NEWS ve good!

NO JOKE! IT'S NATIONAL JOKE DAY!

       TUESDAY, AUGUST 16, 2022

NO JOKE! IT'S NATIONAL JOKE DAY!

It's true! This is "National Joe Day!" Just

laast month I told you about "Old Joke Day."

That was a day to bring out the classics.

This "holiday" is designed to celebrate jokes

old and new and to appreciate the benefits

of humor in our lives. I asked our 7-year-

old grandson Anthony to join in the

observance by offering a joke. He pulled

out one of his favorities/ What do you call

a ber with out teeth? A Gummy Bear! That's

a good one Anthony! When I asked him about

the oldest joke he knows he simply replied

"You grandpa!" That is kind of funny! Hope

you'll tell a joke or two today and that all

your NEWS is good!

BEACH OF DREAMS!

   MONDAY, AUGUST 15, 2022

         BEACH OF DREAMS!

We are back from our annual family

vacation in Wildwood, NJ. But just before

we left I saw something I'd never seen

there before! You expect to see certain

things at the shore! Kids digging in the

sand. Flying kites! Buiding sand castles.

Maybe ever some Volletball! But this

year I saw something new. At least new

to be! Beach Baseball brought little

league kids from all over the country to

Wildwood for  major tournmernt! Of course

playing basball on the beach takes a lot of

special maintenance. Watering the "field"

as oftrn as possible. Rolling the surface and

painting base and fould lines in the sand!To the

kids, of course, tjey are "Fields Of Dreams"

as theyh compete for national recongintion!

It give a while new meaning to the term "Sand

Lot Baseball." Congratulations to all the

players! Hope all your NEWS is good!

The family

Well our summer vacation in Wildwood New Jersey is just about over. For the past week I have been bringing you reruns of  blogs posted sometime in the past. It's likely I will not have a blog tomorrow night. I will probably be driving back home at that time to relieve Carl who has been house sitting for us while we vacation. This vacation has been extra special because it has truly been a family vacation. Our children were here. Their children were here. Even or eldest grandsons fiance. A real family event. Quite rare these days except, perhaps, for a few hours we get to spend together around christmas. We've made many memories and rekindled some memories in our minds. One evening my wife and I retired early and heard laughter coming from upstairs. It was our three kids. All full grown now with kids of their own. And yet they're laughter and conviction with one another sounded so much like when they were just preteens kidding with each other back at home. Great memories rekindled, and great new memories made. If you have a chance to take a family vacation I strongly encourage you to do so. Hopefully I'll be back with a new blog on Monday if time permits. Until then I hope all your news is good.

THE MUSIC GOES ROUND AND ROUND!

Here's another of my Summer Re+Run BLOGS while I'm on  vacation!

 FRIDAY AUGUST 12TH, 2022

THE MUSIC GOES ROUND & ROUND!

While most people are listening to their
favorite songs on IPods or Smart phones
these days there was a time when the music
really did go round and round.
Today is "Vinyl Record Day." It was
created by the Vinyl Record Day Company,
a non-profit organization dedicated to
preserving vinyl music, its culture, art, and
sound.
Back in my Disk Jockey days virtually
all the music you heard coming through
your radio came from records, vinyl disks,
played on record players, turntables, in our
radio studios.
Even then music was changing. Records
that spun at 33 and a third rpm were being
displaced by the 45's which most rock
artists used to promote their hits.
I still have a small collection of the old
record albums as well as 45's, including
some Disk Jockey copies!
It's kind of surprising they survived
after being played over and over back in
the day, Not to mention our system of
"slip cueing" the records. We'd start
playing the record off the air until we
heard the first notes in our headsets. Then
we'd physically stop the record, pull it
back half a turn (while the turntable
continued to turn) then go on the air,
and let go of the record so the song would
start exactly when we wanted it to!
A lot of people listened in those
days. I got an idea just how many one
day when I blocked the door to the
control room at WBRX in Berwick and
played "Summertime Blues" about 35
times before the Chief Engineer
managed to break in and take my copies
away!
Vinyl Record Day brings back some
great memories for me! My fun days in
radio before I switched over to the news
beat! Music was better than murders!
I'm told, by those who should know,
that vinyl is making a comeback!
I hope that's true and that all your
News is good!

A CALL FOR HELP!

    THURSDAY, AUGUST 11, 2022

              A CALL FOR HELP!

A bit more history trivia today my

friends/ Sometimes history can prove to

be very strange! And sometimes some

history heroes get lost in time. Such is

the case with Theodore (Ted) Haubner.

He was a radio operator aboard the S.S.

Arapahoe which was sailing from New

York to Charleston, SC, when its

propeller shaft broke. That left the ship

adrift in the so-called 'Graveyard of the

Atlantic" off the outer banks of NC! The

150 passengers on board were in very real

danger, And it was on this very date in 1910

that Haubner became the first person at sea

to send the distress signal SOS! A sister ship,

the S.S. Iroquois, heard the call, responded,

and was able to tow the Arapahoe to safety.

Ironically, after the vessel was repaired a

few months later it was sailing for New York

when it was the Iroquois that ran into serious

trouble with a broken rudder near the same

area off NC! It also sent out an SOS which was

immediately received by Ted Haubner on the

Arapahoe! He thus became the first sailor to

both send and receive an SOS Distress call.

The Titanic's use of SOS came two years

later! Hope you're not in distress and that

all your NEWS is good!

LAB WORK

,WEDNESDAY,AUGUST 10, 2022

               LAB WORK!

Working in a laboratory hour after

hour and day after day can certainly

give one a headach. But that's what

German Chemist Felix Hoffman did.

He took on a challenging project as

he tried to find ways to synthesizer

acetylsalicylic acid. He finally

succeeded on this day in 1897!

Eventually he set up a company to

market his new chemical miracle

after it was patented/ The company

was Bayer! His product, of course,

was asprin! Hope you don't need

one and that all your NEWS is good!

TRY AGAIN!

    TUESDAY,  AUGUST 9, 2022

              TRY AGAIN!

   Remember that old saying..."If at

first you don't succeed, try, try again?"

Well we're lucky so many people subscribed

to that policy! On this very date in 1829 the

very first steam locomotive, the Stourbridge

Lion began operating in the United States.

It was built in England and sent to Honesdale

Pennsylvania to haul coal from the mines. The

engine worked just fine. But it was too heavy for

the rails and was quickly disassembled and ended

up in a museum. The idea was good though and

lighter engines took over the work. On August

9th of 1803 a Pennsylvania gentleman, Robert

Fulton, generally regarded as the commercial

inventor of steam powered river boats, launched

his first vessel in the Seine river in France. It

sank!!!! Fortunately Robert kept trying and

eventually succeeded very well. A good lesson

for all! Hope you're well and that all your NEWS

is good! (Class dismissed.)

The Service Station

 The service station.

Our family is on vacation in New jersey. My son got gas here today. And attendant came to his window and asked for his order. DJ said " fill her up! I am reminded of the days of the service station when attendance filled up our gas tank at each visit. Routinely they would also ask to check your oil and clean your windshield. Things have changed since those days. And I'm not just talking about the cost of gasoline. Back then what I paid for a gallon now, probably would have filled my tank. These days I checked my own oil and clean my own windshield whenever possible oh for the day is of the service station. Hope you still have one somewhere around your neighborhood, that you're well, and that all your news is good.

WHAT GOES AROUND!

I'M ON VACATION FRIENDS! SO TODAY

I'M FEATURING A SUMMER RE-RUN BLOG!

HOPE ON BOARD AND ENJOY THE RIDE!

      SUNDAY, AUGUST 7, 2021

       WHAT GOES AROUND...

We were thinking about going for a

drive the other day when our recently

graduated grandson Ryan stopped by.

As usual he took on the task, under very

sunny skies, of cutting our grass. We thought

it only right to invite him on our ride. Ay first

he said no, not wanting to take us away from

the Miata on a fine top down day. But as much

as we love driving somewhere in the sports

car we'd far rather spend time with any of our

grandkids. Ryan finaly said yes. But he insisted

on driving us! He recently got the truck of his

dreams and loves driving it anywhere at the

drop of a hat. It's ironic. For so many years

we've driven our kids and then grandkids

to all kinds of events and adventures. Now

here we were being the ones driven! I was impressed.

But not wanting to miss a great opportunity I

waited for just a few miles then shouted out

"Are we there yet?!" It had to be done! It

should be done to all the kids! It's my turn

now! Hope you're well and that all your

NEWS is good!

WAS HE THERE?

   SATURDAY, AUGUST 6, 2022

            WAS HE THERE?

I appreciate all the comments that come

in on my blogs each and every day! I've noticed
that some of you like my travel stories and many
seen to like it when I'm writing about history/
   This blog has both!
My wife and I were in Tamagua on recently.
We visited the Odd Fellow's Cemetery where
William Heath is buried.
"Billy" Heath has a fascinating story! His
family moved to Tamaqua in Schuylkill County.
He ran into some trouble and decided to run off
and join the Army!
         Unfortunately trouble went along with
him! Soon after enlisting Bill found himself
being sent into battle! He was wounded but
managed to get himself away from the
battlefield!
He found someone to help him with
his wounds but after he recovered he refused
to go back to the army! Instead he went back
to Tamaqua where he and his wife raised 7 children.
There are two monuments baring William
Heath's name. One is his tombstone in the
Odd Fellows Cemetery in Tamaqua The other
is in Colorado where his name is among
those of other soldiers killed in action at the
battle of the Little Big Horn!
William "Billy" Heath claimed to have
survived Custer's Last Stand!
The story is, of course, controversial
but there is some evidence that supports his
version!
Hope you're well and that all your
NEWS is good! .

IN A STEW!

   FRIDAY, AUGUST 5, 2022

          IN A STEW!

    This is "National Oyster Day!"

The oyster, as you probably know, is

a shell fish. It's found in both salt and

fresh water. Some people like to eat them

raw. I always enjoyed them in oyster stew!

I used to be able to get a can of oyster stew

from the Campbell Soup Company. But

some years back they got a bad batch of

oysters from some polluted water off

Korea and they stopped offering the stew

after that. I tried diving for my own but

the only ones I found must have been

polluted too. They had these "little while

marbles inside so I just tossed them all

away! Luckily I found canned oysters and

my wife has been able to use them to make

my oyster stew/ Now I don't have to worry

about taking a dive anymore! Hope you're

enjoying some oysters somewhere today and

that all your NEWS is good!

NEVER GIVE UP!

     THURSDAY, AUGUST 4, 2022

              NEVER GIVE UP!

There's an old saying in sports.."

Never give up." It's a thought we really

should apply to life in general. Things

may seem as bad as they can get but

things can turn around faster than you

could ever imagine! A perfect example

comes to us from the world of sports

on this very day, August 4th., 1929.

The Cleveland Indians (yes, they were

called the Indians back then) were in

New York playing against the New York

Yankees. It was the top of the 9th and

Cleveland was losing 6 to 5. There were

two outs. And then, suddenly, Cleveland

scored. Amd scored. And scored! They

won the game 14 to 6! As a famous

Yankee (Yogi Berra) once said..."It

ain't over till it's over!" Your "downs"

can turn around just as quickly so....

never give up! Hope you'll follow

Yogi's advice and that all your NEWS

is good!

AND SO IT BEGAN!

   WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3, 2022

            AND SO IT BEGAN!

I'm pretty sure when you were in

school years ago you probably heard

the rhyme.."In 14 hundred and 92

Columbus sailed the ocrean blue."

Well this was the very day that voyage

began! August 3rd., 1492! Columbus

had hoped to find a short route to the

far east. Instead he had the first cruise

to Bermuda! Many have cruised there

since! He is known for discovering

the Americas (and telling people

about what he found!) He commanded

three ships. The Nina, the Pinta, and

the Santa Maria. I've always geard there

was a forth vessel.....but it sailed off the

end of the square earth! Who knows?

In any case that's today's history lesson.

Hope all your NEWS is good!

LIFE AT SEVEN!

     TUESDAY, AUGUST 2, 2022

              LIFE AT SEVEN!

     My youngest grand child, Anthony

DeCosmo, is celebrating his Birthday

today! Anthony is now 7-years-old!

7 today seems a little different than

it did when I reached that ripe old age.

For instance, Anthony celebrated by

driving his own Go Cart around a track.

It was a long time ago but if I recall

correctly anything I was driving at age

7 very likely was propelled by my own

feet turning pedals!  I remember

entertaining myself by listening to the

radio or maybe going to a movie at a

neighborhood theater. Anthony has a

device he called "a switch" on which

he plays games, drive race cars, or

takes on villians! He can watch movies

on his Dad or Mom's cell phone..whatever

neighborhood they happen to be in!

I'm glad to say he still enjoys playing

outside amd even enjoys traditional

games like Hide & Seek. Thankfully,

some things don't change! Happy

Birthday Anthony. The future is yours

and. hopefully, all your NEWS will be

good!
