WE GROW TOO SOON OLD
The Pennsylvania Dutch have a
saying. "We grow too soon old, and
too late smart."
Our Hazleton High School Class
of 1960 held it's 55th reunion last
night and I was shocked at how all
my fellow classmates had aged!
Not in the past 55 years. Just in
the past 24 hours! Everybody seemed
so much younger at the "Meet and
Greet" get together the night before!
Especially the men! I think it was
the suits! The "Meet and Greet" was
an informal gathering.
When we showed up at the Country
Club for the formal reunion most of
the guys were wearing suits or at least
sports jackets. The formal stuff seems
to age us.
In spite of the appearance of age
there was no evidence that anybody
was any smarter! Take the class picture
for instance. All of the class members
were sent to an adjoining room for the
expressed purpose of taking a group
photo.
Immediately upon arrival somebody
suggested that as many men as possible
sit on the chairs in the front row. News
flash students. Men are generally taller
than women and you don't put tall people
in the front row of a group photo!
Next, those present spread out as
though we were to be filmed in
Cinemascope! Since there was no official
photographer with proper equipment, non
class members, like my wife, began snapping
photos with everything from Smartphones
to video cameras. While they did, half the
folks that were suppose to be posing were
turning to one another commenting on
everything from their current addresses
to the weather.
I could almost picture our Principal
from 55 years ago trying to get everyone's
attention during a student assembly. He
must have been laughing from heaven
as we stood there looking a foolish as the
18-yeqar-old students we had once been!
We grow too soon old, and too late
smart. Hope the newspaper guy comes
next time and that all your NEWS is good.
