GOT YA COVERED!!!
Back in "my day," before Political
correctness, Columbus Day always
fell on October 12th.
It's a national holiday in many countries
in the Americas and elsewhere which
officially celebrates the anniversary of
Christopher Columbus's arrival in the
Americas on October 12, 1492.
It's been celebrated unofficially since
the late 18th century and officially in
various countries since the early 20th century.
Somewhere along the line we, the U.S.,
moved it to the Monday closest to the 12th.,
which is generally OK since it gives many
people a three-day weekend.
But whenever the date it was always
dedicated to Christopher Columbus.
I noticed, when researching the day
on line, that old Chris is sharing "his
day" this year.
October 12th is also listed as Leif
Erikson Day. Many claim he came to
the shores of America long before
Columbus. He just never bothered to
tell anybody about it.
Had he been more publicity
conscious it might be Erikson, rather
than Columbus, Ohio!
But given the likelihood that
either guy found people here when
they came ashore the date is also
listed as "Native American Day!"
There's an "out" for those of
you who'd rather not take sides as
to which observance to celebrate.
It's also International Beer and
Pizza Day! I love a good compromise!!!
Hope you're celebrating
something and that all your NEWS is
good!
