Used To Bes!

I call them "Used To Bes."
    Things or places that have
changed from the way we
remember them.
I've been pointing them out to
my children and now my grand
children for years.
     Here's an example. They are
landmarks that don't get the credit
they deserve.
    They are "telephone" or "utility"
poles and you'll find them nearly
everywhere.
They hold the wires that carry
electrical power, cable television,
and, yes, even telephone
conversations, from town to town.
And if you're in an area where
you don't see them......................
you're either in a super modern
community with underground wiring.
or. ......you're probably deep in the
woods where you run the risk of
hearing the melody of "Dueling Banjos!"
     I've traveled Route 92 between
Tunkhannock and Falls a thousand
times. I guess the telephone poles
along that route have been there
forever.
But I just noticed.....there are NO
WIRES!
     One could be tempted into
believing it's all part of the trend
towards "wireless communications."
But the insulators on top of the
poles suggest they carried electrical
lines at one time in the past.
And the cross bars are wide
enough to have carried plenty of
phone lines with lots of room left
for Comcast or Frontier or some
other cable company.
     So what happened?
How did they become "Used To
Bes?"
     Doesn't seem like there's
anybody to ask. And you can't tap
into those lines to find out because
there's only a strand or two hanging
here or there.
All those poles, about 11 miles
worth. You've got to wonder about
all the messages or services they
once provided....and to whom?
Now they seem like such a
waste although  I suppose the birds
are glad they're still there!
Next time you're up that way
take a look.
     Maybe they're like telephone
booths. Maybe we just don't need
them all anymore.
Still, they can make you think
and, maybe, remember some "Used
To Bes" in and around your home
town!
Hope you appreciate the past and
that all your NEWS is good!
