Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

I like newspapers. Though I've spent most of my
"journalistic life" in broadcasting I've never tired
of seeing news in print!
It usually comes in the daily newspaper. You'll
also find it in magazines. And then, once a year,
it comes in the form of a "Family Newsletter!"
Most of you get one of these updates from
family or close friends around Christmas or New
Years. This year I even got one by way of an
email! But my good friend Bob faithfully mails
his letter each December.
William Randolph Hearst was probably the most
famous newspaper publisher in the United States.
But my buddy Bob may hold that honor when it
comes to the publication of Family Newsletters!
This year's edition was his 43rd!
At my age I don't have a lot of major goals left
in life. But there is one. I like to see if I can get a
mention in Bob's publication! I deem it a "sign of
success!"
That said, 2012, was a very good year! I was
both noted and quoted in his latest edition! In
its own way that's like being nominated for an
Academy Award!
My buddy uses his annual newsletter to bring
everyone up to date on his family's activities in
the previous year. Since it's rare for him to ever
sit still there's a lot to report! I generally try to
set aside an hour or two to read, then re-read,
his letter.
The newsletter this year contains two full
pages of print and another filled with family
photographs! And that's just for general
circulation! My friend also includes a personalized
hand written note and, usually, a few special
pictures from a few of our regular get togethers
during the year.
Rumor has it stock in the Postal system
sky rockets during the week he mails the letters.
Newspapers could take a few lessons from
Bob. He makes it very obvious there's a lot of
good things worth noting in the world around us!
And I, for one, would much rather read about
the adventures in his 1924 Studebaker than the
latest local political controversy!
Many years ago Bob delivered the daily
newspaper to my home in Hazleton. I'm glad
that, in this sense, I'm still on his route!
If you are very very lucky you will have a
friend like mine in your life! If you do you can
be sure all your really important NEWS will be
good!
