Trailing The Indians!
You won't find it on your GPS. But make
just the right turn off of Elm Street in busy
downtown Scranton and you'll find yourself
stepping into history!
You'll have to "step" because this new section
of the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail is for
hikers and bikers (bicycles that is) not for
motorists.
It's part of a trail system that will eventually
stretch for some 70 miles. But this two mile
section is very special!
This section was originally used by the Seneca
Nation of Native Americans as a path along the
Lackawanna River. I thought they might be
trying to avoid the tie ups on I-81...but this was
long before the Interstate came along.
A Penndot worker helping to develop the trail
was so taken by its beauty and history that he's
added art work to celebrate the heritage. It
includes a 14 foot tree carving of a native American
carrying a huge fish! It looks so good I found
myself craving Salmon!
The Seneca Nation paid a price to blaze this
trail. Years of clearing the way and walking the
path. It cost us 1.5 million to prepare it for today's
users! That's a lot of Wampum! So it's good to see
it being used!
Of course the trail is paved now. We don't
go in much for roughing it in moccasins these
days. But the developers have done their best to
preserve the natural beauty and added some extra
attractions like the Indian carving, a stone picnic
table complete with etchings, and some other neat
things I'll let you find for yourself if you take the
time to see them!
Hope you'll go take a hike...and that all of your
NEWS is!
