SUMMER SOUNDS

  SATURDAY, JULY 13TH., 2019
         SUMMER SOUNDS!

I was thinking of an old song by the
late Robert Goulet as we drove home
after a movie Friday. It was called
"Summer Sounds" and the opening
included the line  "Listen to the music
of the carousel, the tinglelingle, lingle
of the ice cream bell."
It came to mind because, seemingly
out of nowhere, my wife and I heard
that ice cream bell!
It was coming from a truck parked
along a street in Wilkes-Barre with a
flock of kids and a few adults waiting
to order.
While those trucks continue to be
fairly common in the bigger cities this
was the first one we'd seen in a very
long time!
It wasn't one of those better know
companies like Mister Softy or Good
Humor. But it was an old fashion over
the road ice cream truck!
There were several that made the
rounds in Hazleton when I was growing
up. And the "summer sounds" back then
came from a couple other trucks too.
        One carried a miniature merry-go-
round not much larger than the kind
you'd find at a shopping mall. The other
hauled a small version of the Whip ride
you'd find at amusement parks.
Like the ice cream truck, each had
its own bell and/or music to, like the Pied
Piper, lure kids out of their homes or
backyards to spend some money on a
summer treat!
Glad to see the ice cream truck
back! Hope more will follow and that
all your NEWS is good!
